Kyoto’s Top 5 Hotels for a Memorable Stay

Kyoto is a city in Japan renowned for its rich history, beautiful temples, and traditional culture. Although it is an essential city to visit when you come to Japan, there are so many hotels to choose. Here are five hotels that are conveniently located for sightseeing and offer a comfortable stay. I trust this will make your Kyoto sightseeing more comfortable.

  1. The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto
  2. Suiran, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Kyoto
  3. Hotel the MItsui Kyoto
  4. The Westin Miyako Kyoto
  5. The Prince Kyoto Takaragaike, Autograph Collection

1. The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto

It is located in the heart of Kyoto, known for its exquisite blend of traditional Japanese and modern elements. Quietly nestled by the Kamogawa River, it offers luxurious panoramic views of the magnificent Higashiyama mountains. You can enjoy the changing atmosphere of the Kamogawa River throughout the day—morning, noon, and night—or take a leisurely stroll along its banks. For breakfast, you can choose between Japanese and Western cuisine. I opted for the Western breakfast, and I was particularly impressed by the delicious croissants. While I encourage you to try the Japanese breakfast during your trip to Japan, you might also want to give the croissants a try if you’re interested.

2. Suiran, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Kyoto

Suiran is a luxury hotel located in Arashiyama. This ryokan-style hotel allows guests to fully experience the Japanese atmosphere. From its restaurant, which has a history of over 100 years, you can enjoy views of the garden. In autumn, you can dine while gazing at the autumn leaves, offering a truly luxurious experience. Some rooms offer the opportunity to enjoy the Arashiyama hot springs, and there are also private hot springs available, allowing the entire family to bathe together. The location is excellent, and you can enjoy the ultimate luxurious experience.

3. Hotel the Mitsui Kyoto

This hotel, with its towering gate that boasts a 300-year history, inherits the legacy of the Mitsui family’s main residence, which existed for over 250 years. The Mitsui family is one of Japan’s most prominent merchant families, with a history that stretches back to the Edo period (1603-1868). As you enter the lobby, a vast garden unfolds before your eyes. The hotel is designed to surround this expansive garden, allowing every room to enjoy the garden view. There are Nijo Suites and Nijo Rooms that offer views of Nijo Castle through large windows. You can enjoy thermal springs sourced from the Kyoto Nijo Onsen, which rises from about 1,000 meters underground within the premises.

4. The Westin Miyako Kyoto

This hotel is close to famous and historic sites, including Nanzenji Temple and Heian Jingu Shrine, and offers easy access to the city center. You can experience panoramic views of Kyoto city through the restaurant’s large windows. But the main reason I recommend this hotel is because it has a mountain behind it. The rear of the hotel connects to the mountain, allowing guests to go for a hike in the back mountain.

5. The Prince Kyoto Takaragaike, Autograph Collection

This hotel is characterized by its circular buildings surrounding a round courtyard. You can enjoy drinking by the fire in the courtyard, and depending on the season, you can also appreciate cherry blossoms, autumn foliage, and a Christmas tree. This year, I was able to enjoy both the autumn leaves and the Christmas tree at the same time. The collaboration between autumn and winter is quite interesting.
