Family Adventure Awaits: Whale Sharks and More at Kaiyukan Aquarium

What are the must-visit places in Osaka for families with children?

Osaka is a city overflowing with charm and warm-hearted people. If you ask me where to visit in Osaka, I’d recommend many places such as Osaka Castle Park, the Tower of the Sun, the area around Osaka Tenmangu, and more.

Especially recommended for families with children is the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan.

It is one of the largest aquariums in the world, featuring diverse marine life.

Highlights of Kaiyukan Aquarium You Can’t Miss

When it comes to Kaiyukan Aquarium, the whale shark is the star attraction. A large sculpture of a whale shark is located at the center of the building, symbolizing the aquarium itself.

Aqua Gate

As you enter, the first thing you will see is this tunnel-like space that feels like you’re underwater.

Rays and fish swim effortlessly above your head. Watching fish from below is a rare sight that will surely excite the children.

The tunnel is approximately 11 meters long. From here, let’s begin your journey into the underwater world.

Japanese Forest

In the Japan Forest area, you can find small-clawed otters. You can observe these otters living by a stream with a waterfall, in a lush natural setting covered in moss.

In the past, otters used to inhabit Japan. This area replicates the natural environment from that time.

The Massive Tank Housing the Whale Sharks

Whale sharks migrate around the coastal waters of Japan from early summer to autumn. They can grow up to 10 to 12 meters in length.

Despite the challenges involved in their care, 2 whale sharks are kept in a massive tank at the aquarium.

Galaxy of Jellyfish

My favorite area is the jellyfish exhibit.

In this galaxy-themed space, jellyfish drift gracefully through the darkness, shimmering as they go. It is a very enchanting and soothing environment.

Popular Creatures at Kaiyukan Aquarium

One of the most popular animals at the aquarium is the penguin.

They are all lined up on the ice, and you can observe them swimming from this close distance.

Dolphins are also very sociable. They swim back and forth right in front of you, full of energy.

At certain times of the day, you can watch the zookeepers feeding the animals. Today, I was able to watch the feeding of the spotted seals.

They were very smart!

Interesting Creatures

Porcupinefish (Harisenbon)

Known for its ability to inflate its body and its spiky appearance when threatened.

Japanese Spider Crab (Takaashigani)

The Japanese spider crab, with its long legs, is one of the largest crabs in the world.

Arowana

Arowanas are known for their sleek bodies and shimmering scales. They are often called “dragon fish” due to their resemblance to the mythical creature. Arowanas are fascinating for their ability to jump out of the water to catch prey.

The Souvenir Shop at Kaiyukan Aquarium

At the souvenir shop by the exit, you can find many unique items from the aquarium, including those featuring whale sharks. Let me introduce what I bought:

  • The whale shark coin purse is my child’s first wallet. It has a strap so it can be worn around the neck, and the back has a slot for a pass case.
  • The whale shark laundry net caught my eye immediately, and I couldn’t resist buying it. I plan to use it when traveling.
  • The whale shark stamp has my child’s first name written in hiragana.
  • The otter keychain came from a gachapon machine at the souvenir shop. Gachapon machines are so exciting and fun, aren’t they?
  • The whale spoon and sea slug spoon are for my child to use at home. These adorable spoons make every meal even more enjoyable.
